Crowds return to the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing each
summer for the people-watching, the free swag, even the wacky offerings at the
action-sports festival. But the hard-core surf fans plant themselves on the
sand or wiggle into a spot on the pier through the sweltering afternoons to get
an up-close looks at some of the world's best surfers.
